Why External Staircases?
A bespoke external staircase does more than connect levels outdoors—it provides safe access in all weather, unlocks roof terraces or garden routes, and can double as a compliant fire-escape where required.
Our designs prioritise durability and grip. Hot-dip galvanised steel resists corrosion, while open grating or anti-slip treads shed water and ice for reliable footing through the seasons.
Layouts are flexible: straight runs for compact footprints, half-landings to turn corners, and switchback flights to save space on tight plots. Guarding and balustrades are sized for safety without blocking light or airflow.
For fire-escape applications we size stairs for evacuation flow, provide continuous handrails and specify robust landings, ensuring a clear, predictable route when it matters most.
At Staired, every external staircase is engineered to UK standards from day one. We set rise/going, handrail heights and guarding in line with Approved Document K and coordinate details to satisfy project fire strategies.
Fabrication follows UKCA/EN 1090 with traceable materials and qualified welding, so onsite performance matches the specification.
Finish options include hot-dip galvanizing as standard, with additional powder-coat for colour, or duplex systems (galvanize + powder) in coastal or high-exposure environments.
Choose from chequer plate, serrated grating, or composite anti-slip treads; pair with mesh, bar-infill, or glass (where appropriate) balustrades to suit the building’s architecture.
Details that matter outdoors: positive drainage at landings, kick-plates where tools may roll, and snow/leaf management so the stair stays clear and safe. We also plan anchorages to avoid thermal bridging and water traps at the building interface.
Installation is fast and tidy. Prefabricated flights and landings minimise disruption; we protect routes, coordinate lifts and leave a neat seal where steel meets façade or slab.
Maintenance is straightforward—periodic wash-downs and simple checks for fixings and coatings keep longevity high. Where heavy use is expected, we can design replaceable wear nosings or bolt-on treads.
Upgrades are easy too: add shelter canopies, motion-sensor lighting for safer night use, or change balustrade infills later without altering the main structure.
Planning the next step?
Explore recent builds in our portfolio, review standards on Technical & Compliance, or read the UK guidance in Approved Document K.
Share overall height, available footprint, exposure level and intended use (access or fire-escape) to receive tailored options and a precise external staircase proposal.
Where access requirements apply, we can design the external staircase to coordinate with Part M provisions—comfortable pitches, consistent treads, clear handrail extensions and visual contrast on nosings for safer wayfinding.
Drainage is detailed from the start: landing falls, drip edges and open treads keep water moving away from the façade, while sealed interfaces and appropriate sealants prevent moisture ingress at fixings.
For security and safeguarding we offer anti-climb infills, lockable gates and tamper-resistant fixings. Acoustic pads help reduce footfall noise on shared courtyards.
If planners are involved, we support submissions with drawings, specifications and coating data. After installation, you’ll receive O&M guidance and a maintenance schedule, plus finish and workmanship warranties to keep the stair looking good and performing reliably for years.
When needs change, the modular design lets you update infills, add canopies or retrofit lighting with minimal disruption.
